Hey Abe! I’m getting ready for this upcoming tax season. How do I know which filing status to select?

Great question! I’m glad you’re starting to prepare for tax season now.
To determine your filing status, consider your marital status and living arrangements at the end of the tax year. Here’s a quick guide:

Single

Unmarried, divorced, legally separated, or a registered domestic partner at the end of the tax year.

Married Filing Jointly

Married by the last day of the tax year, living together, legally separated with no finalized divorce, or spouse deceased during the tax year.

Married Filing Separately

Married by the last day of the tax year, choosing to record both your and your spouse’s income, exemptions, and deductions on separate returns.

Head of Household

Single or unmarried, with a qualifying dependent. Maintain a residence for more than six months, excluding temporary absences.

Qualifying Widow/Widower

Qualified for married filing jointly in the year of the spouse’s death, maintaining a household and providing over 50% of its cost, for up to two years after the spouse’s death. No remarriage during this period.
