Hey Abe! I am a lease/owner operator, and I paid my co-driver $1,200 in 2024. Do I have to file anything for this?
Great question! This is a common scenario we see in the trucking industry. If you paid your co-driver more than $600 in 2024, you may need to issue that co-driver a 1099-NEC. A 1099-NEC reports payments made to non-employees for services rendered.
If the $1,200 paid to your co-driver ran through your settlements, your contract company may issue the co-driver a W-2 or 1099-NEC. If you paid your co-driver $1,200 out of pocket, and this did not run through your settlements, you will need to issue your co-driver a 1099-NEC and file it with the IRS. The deadline to send your co-driver a 1099-NEC and file it with the IRS is January 31, 2025.
